Established in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to recognize the importance of milk as a global food, and to celebrate the dairy sector, it is now celebrated every year on June 1st. This year’s theme highlighted the work already being done to accelerate climate action and help reduce the dairy sector’s impact on the planet.
Used as fresh and storable nutritional foods from the early days of civilization, annual milk consumption is now estimated at billions of liters worldwide with a growing annual consumption per capita. Production-wise, India is the largest producer with 22 percent of the global volume, followed by the United States of America, China, Pakistan, and Brazil.
Milk products are highly diversified, from milk (fermented or not) to cheese, cream, and butter to name a few. Their production is almost entirely derived from cattle (81%), buffaloes (15%), goats (2%), sheep (1%), and camels (0.5%). Appreciated for their taste and nutritional features, these products are essential components of our diets.
As a key supplier of the dairy sector, we are proud to contribute to this evolving industry!
